Terms of service
Last updated: 20 August 2026
These terms govern your use of BookGlot, operated by [COMPANY NAME] (company number [COMPANY NUMBER], registered office [REGISTERED ADDRESS], "BookGlot", "we", "us"). By creating an account you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use the service.
What BookGlot is
BookGlot connects language learners with tutors who run subscription-based book clubs: a small cohort reads a book in their target language together and meets weekly with a tutor to discuss it. Tutors may also offer 1-on-1 lessons to students already in one of their clubs. We don't host or supply book text — clubs read a public-domain edition or a book members buy themselves.
Eligibility
You must be 18 or older to create an account. By confirming your age at sign-up, you confirm you meet this requirement. We may suspend or close an account we learn belongs to someone under 18.
Your account
One account can hold both a student and a tutor role — you switch between them in the product. You're responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for activity on your account. Tell us immediately if you suspect unauthorised access.
Subscriptions & payment
Club subscriptions and 1-on-1 lesson bookings are billed via Stripe. Subscriptions renew monthly until you cancel; cancelling stops future billing but doesn't refund the period you've already paid for. Seats are limited and allocated on a first-confirmed-payment basis. Full detail on cancellations and refunds is in our refund policy, which forms part of these terms.
Tutors
Tutors are independent contractors, not BookGlot employees. Tutor-specific terms (commission, payouts, the tutor's own responsibilities) are set out in our Tutor Agreement, which applies alongside these terms to anyone teaching on BookGlot.
Video sessions
Live sessions run over our video infrastructure (LiveKit). We don't currently record sessions. Don't record, screen-capture, or otherwise capture audio/video of a session — including with your own device — without the informed consent of everyone present; see our Community Guidelines.
Your content
You keep ownership of what you post — discussion posts, reviews, vocabulary notes, profile content. By posting it, you give BookGlot a licence to store, display, and distribute it within the product to the people it's meant for (e.g. your club, or the public if it's a tutor review). You're responsible for making sure you have the right to post what you post, and that it doesn't infringe anyone else's rights.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Harass, discriminate against, or abuse another member or tutor.
- Post content that's unlawful, infringing, or that you don't have rights to post.
- Circumvent seat limits, payment, or age-verification.
- Record or redistribute a session without everyone's consent.
- Use the service to distribute copyrighted book text you don't have rights to.
- Attempt to access another user's account or data without authorisation.
We may suspend or close an account that breaches these terms, at our discretion and proportionate to the issue.
Reviews
Reviews should reflect a genuine experience with a tutor you've actually studied with. Fake, incentivised, or retaliatory reviews may be removed, and repeated abuse of the review system may lead to suspension.
Disclaimers
BookGlot is a platform connecting students and tutors — we don't control, and aren't responsible for, the quality of any individual tutor's teaching, nor for a student's progress. The service is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent the law allows.
Liability
Nothing in these terms limits liability where the law doesn't allow it — for example, death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or fraud. Subject to that, our liability to you for any claim relating to the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose, and we're not liable for indirect or consequential losses.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the product changes. We'll update the date above and, for material changes, notify registered users by email before the change takes effect. Continuing to use BookGlot after a change takes effect means you accept the updated terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and any dispute not resolved informally is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales. Nothing here affects any statutory rights you have as a consumer that can't be waived by contract.
